How to download SPSS
Next, we will tell you how to download iy for free so that you can access this software.
Specifically, we will show you how to get a free license and enjoy this statistical tool for 14 days.
1. Check minimum requirements
Before starting the download, it is important to make sure that your computer meets the minimum requirements for the program, because if it does not, we do not recommend installing it.
Remember that this tool works with a large amount of data and information, and if your machine is not capable of handling it, the user experience will be very poor.
Nevertheless, these are the minimum requirements:
- 1.6GHz CPU.
- 4GB of RAM.
- 4GB hard drive.
- 1024×768 resolution.
Don’t know your machine’s configuration? You can access it in Windows by opening File Explorer, right-clicking on “My Computer” in the left column, and then selecting “Properties.
Does your team have enough power to run this software? Then let’s see how you can get it.
2. Go to download page
Once you are sure that your computer meets the requirements of this program, it is time to get your hands on it, and to do that (obviously) the first thing to do is to go to the official website.
This will ensure that you are not using outdated software.
Once opened, all you have to do is click on the big blue button that says “Try SPSS Statistics for free”.
3. Create an account
The above step takes you to a form you must fill out to become a user, a prerequisite for downloading it.
The first part requires you to enter typical information such as your email address, first name, last name, etc.
Important: You must use a real email because, in addition to being your identifier on the platform (IBMid), you will receive an email that allows you to verify your account.
Another detail to consider is that the password you choose must meet the following requirements
- At least 8 characters.
- One capital letter.
- One lowercase letter.
- One number.
Once everything is filled in, when you click “Next” you will be asked if you are a student or not and your phone number. Fill in the appropriate information and click “Next”.
As indicated below, you will need to go to your email inbox and copy the 7-digit code that you will have received, don’t forget to check your spam folder if the email doesn’t appear.
Finally, you will need to indicate how you prefer IBM to contact you (by phone or email) to inform you about products, offers, etc.
When you are finished, click “Create Account” to complete the process.
4. Download it
Finally, we come to the final steps of downloading the latest version.
The first thing to do is to click on the “Download” button to access the page where the latest version of this software is located.
Scroll down and you will see that you can choose between Windows and Mac versions.
And if your operating system is Microsoft, you have 2 options to choose from depending on your version of Windows (32 or 64 bits).
Important: you can find out your OS version (32 or 64-bit) in ‘My Computer > Properties’.
Once you know, click on the appropriate option and the process will begin automatically.
You are finally ready to download it!
How to install SPSS
Once you have completed the previous steps, you will have the necessary file on your hard drive to install the software on your computer.
It is probably called “SPSSStatisticsSub_Setup_x64.exe” (or something similar).
To start the installation, you need to double-click on it, which will launch the installer and start the process, which is very similar to installing any other program in Windows.
Remember, if you are an Apple user, there is a guide to installing SPSS for Mac here.
1. Accept the terms
The first thing you need to do is check the box indicating that you accept the terms and conditions of the application and click “Next”.
Once you have done this, the ‘Continue’ button will become active and you will be able to proceed with the installation.
2. Select the destination folder
The next screen allows you to choose the location where you want to install it. You can leave the default or change it to your liking.
As you can see on the screen, it requires 1.5 GB of free space. So make sure you choose a hard drive with enough capacity for it.
However, if you have free space, it is recommended that you leave it in the default path. Select this folder or any other folder you want, once you have specified it, press the ‘Next’ button again.
3. Wait for the installation to complete
Clicking “Next” will start the installation process, which may take more or less time depending on the performance of your equipment.
When it is finished, and if everything went well, you will see a message on the screen saying that the installation is finished and a button that says “Start”.
Click it to start, and don’t worry if it takes a long time to appear. This is normal the first time you run it.
4. Enter your IBMid
The penultimate step is as easy as the others, since all you have to do is enter your IBMid (i.e. the email address you used to register) and password to start working with it.
We recommend that you check the ‘Remember me’ box to save yourself this step next time.
5. Grant the necessary permissions
Depending on how you have security set up on your computer, you may see a message stating that the Windows Firewall has blocked some features.
Since the file was downloaded from the official IBM site, there is theoretically no risk of malware or virus infection, so allow access to continue.
6. Getting Started
At this point, the main screen should appear on your monitor. If so, it means that you have completed the installation and are ready to get started.
If for some reason the Welcome screen does not appear, check that you have followed the steps one by one and that your computer is compatible.
Get Previous Versions
If for some reason you don’t want the latest version, you can use older versions of this statistical software. All you have to do is click on the link for the version you want:
These alternatives are great if your computer does not meet the requirements of the latest version, but keep in mind that if you choose a very old one, it will not have the new features and functions.
The fact that it is the most famous statistical program does not mean that it is the only option available. Moreover, in case you don’t know, there is an open source alternative that can serve as a replacement: PSPP.
If you want to know more about it and especially how to get it, we tell you in our guide: download PSPP for PC.
