How to Install SPSS on Mac

Once the above process is complete (and if everything went well) you will have a file on your computer with the name “StatisticsSub_Installer.dmg” in which, if you double-click, the installation process on Mac begins.

In this case, it is a free and 100% legal file because, as we have told you, it is a trial version.

1. Check the minimum requirements

Although before starting the installation, it is important that you check if your computer meets the minimum requirements to run SPPS on Mac, which are these:

  • 1.6GHz processor.
  • 4 GB of hard drive space.
  • 4 GB of RAM.
  • Screen with a minimum resolution of 1024 × 768.

If you don’t know what the specifications of your Apple computer are, you have them in the “About this Mac” , which you can find by clicking on the apple icon in the top menu.

2. Proceed to its installation

Once confirmed that your Apple computer is compatible with this tool, the steps to install it are the same as for any other program.

In other words, the first one is to double-click on the file you just downloaded.

Doing that will open a window which is the installer where once again you need to click on the icon 2 times to start installing it.

Now it is likely that a message will appear indicating that since it is an application downloaded from the Internet (and not from the official Apple store) you must give permission for it to run.

As simple as clicking on “Open”.

Important: This message may not appear if you have checked the box so that it does not ask you again at another time.

The next step is to check the “I agree” box (after reading the terms and conditions, it is assumed) and click the “Continue” button.

At this point in the process, it allows you to choose the location where SPPS will be installed. You can leave the one that comes by default or if you prefer to change it, click on “Select” and choose the one you want.

This window also indicates the space you need: around 1.5 GB.

When everything is correct, click on “Continue” and now, yes, the installation process begins. Depending on each computer, it may take between 5 and 10 minutes.

Once the task is finished, the window will show a message that everything went well and you can start it from there. Of course, keep in mind that when doing it the first time, 2 things will happen.

The first one is that you will have to enter the username and password that you used to download SPSS.

The other is that it is normal that the first time it starts up it takes a little longer than necessary, so be patient.

Download SPSS Statistics based on your OS

In addition to the requirements that we have seen above, to download IBM SPPS Statistics for Mac you must also take into account the operating system you have. Because depending on the one you have installed on your computer, you can use one or the other.

Of course, there is a requirement that you must meet yes or yes: that your computer works with an Intel processor.

So if it doesn’t do that, forget about doing data analysis, working with databases, creating linear models, statistical procedures, and in general, doing an analytical process.

For Mac M1

If you have an Apple computer with an M1 chip and the latest version of Apple’s OS, if you want to work with IBM’s statistical software you should download SPSS 28.

Because even though this version is still not compatible with ARM chips, Rosetta 2 is capable of running the statistical package.

That it is possible that bugs appear and that the performance is not the best but, while you wait for IBM to release a native version for M1 processors, it is the best possible solution.

That, or download SPSS for Windows and install Parallels on your Mac so you can run the Microsoft OS version.

Or you can also download PSPP, the open-source alternative.

Big Sur (11.0)

This version of the operating system for Apple computers came hand in hand with a very important novelty: the M1 processors.

Chips with great advantages (autonomy and power) but with the problem that not all programs are compatible with their architecture.

Luckily, and thanks to the Rosetta 2 technology included in these kits, you can work with the IBM statistical package on your Apple computer with hardly any problems.

The only requirement you must meet is to download version 27 (or later).

Of course, as specified in the official IBM support forum, you may experience a failure when working with the R libraries.

If you want to know more about this problem, we leave you the link to the official forum.

Catalina (10.15)

Supports IBM SPSS Statistics 26, security patches, and upcoming versions of this program.

Despite this, some users of this version of MacOS are unable to install it on Catalina due to an error during installation.

If this is your case, you can follow the instructions in the following video that IBM itself created to solve this problem.

SPSS 24 and 25 are incompatible with Mac OS Catalina, but this version of Apple’s system may work.

Mojave (10.14)

Supports IBM SPSS Statistics 25, security patches, and upcoming versions of this program.

Older versions of the software may not work on this operating system.

High Sierra (10.13)

It only supports IBM SPSS Statistics 25. Future versions of this tool are not officially supported on Mac OS High Sierra.

Older versions may still work correctly.

Sierra (10.12)

Supports IBM SPSS Statistics 25 and 24 only.

If this is your case, installing the Fix Pack for version 24 released by the company is recommended.

It can also be compatible with version 23.

El Capitan (10.11)

Supports IBM SPSS Statistics 24.  In this link, you can read a list of known bugs of this version in the Apple operating system.

You can also access all the documentation for this tool (available in different languages) on the official IBM website.

Version 23 is also supported by El Capitan.

Yosemite (10.10)

Supports IBM SPSS Statistics 24, 23 and 22.

To use version 22 on Yosemite, you need to install Statistics Fix Pack 2.

Important: It may also be necessary to install (or re-install) Apple Java 6 to use Fix pack 2 on this platform.

Mavericks (10.9)

Supports  IBM SPSS Statistics 23 and 22.

To install version 22 on Mac OS Mavericks, you must first install Apple Java SE 6 (1.6.0_65). You can get through this link .
